All in the Way was written over a year ago and sat on my hard drive for a while before I was ready for the challenge. It became an experiment of mixing up time signatures and straying from chord patterns so the verses never repeat in quite the same way. We recorded the drums and bass in a huge room to achieve a large anthem-like sound. We also tracked guitar three separate times to find something that cut the mustard. Piano was put through a delay so there was a rub between the major to minor chord shifts. I added a few pads to give an engine rev sort of quality to the intro. There was a lot I tried to add later on, but in the end, it got in the way of the band. The great performances on drums, bass, and guitar didn't deserve my usual layering of electronics. The lyric pretty much wrote itself on this song, it came together when singing during rehearsal.
lyrics
In the hour when I knew
there was no time to spare
all the worst had come through
but all the fear had gone away
Oh it's all in the way
all your mistakes
all of the hell you have to pay
All you won't learn
All you deserve
And only a fall to set you free
In the hour when I knew
there was no card to play
all stars had gone blue
and all my ghosts had come to stay
Oh it's all in the way
all your mistakes
all of the hell you have to pay
All you won't learn
All you deserve
And only a fall to set you free
So let it go
you can't stop when
You're on the way down
Go take your turn
You made this war
You'll break this fall
You'll learn
You'll burn
In the hour when I knew
there was no right of way
there was no price to pay
there was no life to save
