about

"You read my mind and turned the page"

Helium grew out of a few notes during a 7 minute improv. There was about 10 seconds that I loved and I took that and built the song around it. Always love a good harp on a song and reversing the harp proved to be something I loved even more. We also layered in an electronic auto-harp near the end (perhaps to keep a theme going). I ended up recording vocals to this song a few different times over a couple months. The first few tries felt too practiced and precise, so I had to wait to forget what I rehearsed so I could sing the song for what it was. Same with the piano. I had decided what I was supposed to play and it just wasn't working out. I felt things had to be simpler and more straight forward - yet not linear. So I waited a month to forget what I practiced, so I could find an immediacy in the song. The day before mixing, I reversed some snippets of background vox and sort of made a strange little instrument out of it for the bridge. The cello and guitar merged together to sort of become one instrument in itself and mixing everything was definitely an adventure of it's own.

lyrics

It threw me overboard
You told me what I know
You said the leak would grow
You filled me up and let me go

And I fell out of place
A smile I can't retrace
A heart that won't erase
You read my mind and turned the page

And you were out of touch
But you said just enough
'Cause you shot through me

A love like helium
Gets me high, Makes me dumb
Knows my will is done
Starts me when the race is won

And you were out of touch
But you said just enough
'Cause you shot through me

Here's one for you, One for me
One to have my soul to keep
One for style, One for grace
One for messing up my name
You're all the sky and all the sea
All the signs in front of me
You're calling down that easy street
To love you

'Cause you were out of touch
You said just enough
And you shot through me
